چکیده

Eyedrops often contain additives other than active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as preservatives. The most frequently used preservative is benzalkonium chloride (BAC). When the ocular surface exposed to eyedrops, ingredients and can cause corneal epithelial disorder. Particularly in clinical settings, there great interest disorders resulting from use of glaucoma which inevitable when instilled for a long period time after onset disease. At authors' institute, treated with consideration reducing disorder while ensuring effect lowering intraocular pressure by appropriate choice eyedrops. In this review, we show examples retrospective studies. Sodium hyaluronate eyedrops are prescribed superficial punctate keratitis associated dry eye. Prescribable concentrations sodium Japan 0.1% or 0.3%, 0.3% formulation does not BAC. study showed that pretreatment reduced cytotoxicity BAC cultured cells, whereas an vivo mice instillation was suggested drug may enhance separately administered It prolonged retention on surface. However, have been no reports problem setting. important ophthalmologists understand properties

Evaluation of the cytotoxic effects of ophthalmic solutions containing benzalkonium chloride on corneal epithelium using an organotypic 3-D model

BACKGROUND Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is a common preservative used in ophthalmic solutions. The aim of this study was to compare the cytotoxic effects of BAC-containing ophthalmic solutions with a BAC-free ophthalmic solution using an organotypic 3-dimensional (3-D) corneal epithelial model and to determine the effects of latanoprost ophthalmic solution and its BAC-containing vehicle on corne...

Effect of Eyewash Solution (Commercial Washing Solution) on the Corneal Epithelium: Adverse Effects of Benzalkonium Chloride on the Eye Surface

Purpose: In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in eye washing in healthy individuals due to pollinosis and an increase in the number of people wearing contact lenses. Previously, commercial eyewash solutions contained a preservative (benzalkonium chloride [BAK]) that was shown to be associated with epithelium disorders. However, currently, a reduction in corneal epithelium diso...

Corneal neurotoxicity due to topical benzalkonium chloride.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to determine and characterize the effect of topical application of benzalkonium chloride (BAK) on corneal nerves in vivo and in vitro. METHODS Thy1-YFP+ neurofluorescent mouse eyes were treated topically with vehicle or BAK (0.01% or 0.1%). Wide-field stereofluorescence microscopy was performed to sequentially image the treated corneas in vivo every week for ...

Effects of benzalkonium chloride- or polyquad-preserved fixed combination glaucoma medications on human trabecular meshwork cells

PURPOSE We investigated the potential short and long-term effects in cultured human trabecular meshwork (TM) cells of various topical glaucoma formulations containing different preservatives. METHODS We tested the fixed combination medications 0.004% travoprost plus 0.5% timolol preserved with either 0.015% benzalkonium chloride (BAK; DuoTrav®), or with 0.001% polyquad (PQ; DuoTrav(®) BAK-fre...

MICROBIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF SOME OPHTHALMIC PREPARATIONS CONTAINING DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE

Zinc sulphate and boric acid ophthalmic preparations, containing benzalkonium chloride as preservative, have been investigated against gram-negative and positive bacteria. Viability of bacteria was found after 7 days, although it was completely suppressed after 24 hours of inoculation. Zinc sulphate generally increases the antimicrobial activity of benzalkonium chloride, whereas boric acid ...
